Thanks guys, you've had me surfing for sure. Could be Simkin's work, but the book had only plates of individuals, not groups, and they were nearly the size of the tall thin book, guessing about 18"x6" and not too thick...maybe 20 or 30 plates.
Surfing, did remember that there were plates of guys in trews too.
Ah, the mystery of it. I'm guessing I picked it up back East in the early 70s too, so may be an old one...but without a title or author I'm pretty helpless. A lot of the old book sites don't show pics of the book.
Kicking myself for not having the plates framed years ago.

Ron, this should be the book you're looking for - Kenneth MacLeay's watercolours of various highlanders, as seen on the STA website. It's hard to tell without images.
Matt Newsome should know, though.

Thanks, the page count is right. Haven't been able to find a picture of the book to see for sure. That price is sobering though...not happy my former copy disappeared....grumble....

Aye, could be...but seems too wide, but the cover looks right, save the color but its been many years. Found a pic of the book here http://www.clarebooks.co.uk/item11403.htm
Gonna email my little brother to see if he helps him remember what happened to it.
Thanks for all the great help guys.

Ron,
The book you are looking for may be "The Clans and Tartans of Scotland" by R.R. McIan. Published by Bracken Books London Copyright 1988. ISBN 1 85170 223 7. This book is a reprint of selections from The Clans of the Scottish Highlands by RR McIan published by Ackermann & Co London 1845.(out of print)
It has 40 full color plates suitable for framing and is the book the drawings on the STA site are taken from.
Big Mikey gave me a copy the last time he came over to the shop. I think he said he got it at a flea market.
I'll try to scan some of the prints and you can see if that is the book you are looking for.

Ron,
If this is the book you're looking for, you can pick up a used copy at AbeBooks for as little as $12.00.

Thanks guys,
Steve, if the book is tall and narrow, may be it.
Thanks for the abebooks lead, never heard of them. Guess since they sort of broker there aren't any pics of the book.

Heck, for $12, how wrong can you go? Even if it's not what you're looking for, it sounds like a cool book!
