Looking for a book of kilt drawings
I could kick myself. Back before I was so addicted to kilts I somehow acquired a very nice book of drawings of men in kilts - many military I think, much like the artwork on the STA site.
I remember the book was very tall, about 16" and narrow, about 8". The plates were in full color and suitable for framing if one wanted to cut them out of the book.
Guessing the book came to me back in the 1970s. Remember it was very difficult to shelve in my bookcases either vertically or horizontally.
About ten years ago I passed it on to my nephews thinking it would help them learn their heritage. After kilt addiction struck I asked my little brother if he still had the book. He's looked and can't find it.
I'd like to buy another copy but can't recall the title, author, or artist.
Best I can do is the above. Thought I might just ask the board in case someone else had the book or knew of it.
Thanks for any clues.

Osprey has the Scottish Units of the World Wars.
For older pics, I know there is a book out there but I don't know the title. Around here, it's not uncommon to see those pages already cut out and framed in "art shops".
You might like the website of the Scottish Military Historical Society. They have pics, tartans, history, all the stuff you seem to like. And on my overview, for what that's worth, they seem to be a good academic site.

Hey lady, thanks,
The book I'm seeking was hard cover with a dust jacket. Beleive both the background color of the jacket and the book cover itself were red or maroon.
Inside were mostly plates of kilted Scots in various tartans and manners of dress, so much like the sketches on the STA site.
Thanks for the link though,

I don't think it's the one you're looking for but I didn't spend a long time looking at the paintings.
Go back to the TSA site, >click on the Tartan menu, there'll will be a drop down menu, near the bottom is another drop down menu Tartan Paintings > I think you're after the McLeay paintings.
I was thinking the artist might be Richard Simkins but I can't find any books, just some prints on ebay.
Hope this helps.

Wow! Thanks!
Had missed those links. Still not sure, my memory doesn't match either...frustrating. Seemed more MacLeay- like. Just have to trust my brother to find the book someday, or mourn its loss.

Hey Ron - Several years ago, after I had started wearing the kilt (but not yet full time) I got into a friendly discussion with a Lodge Brother and he showed me a "Coffee Table" book, that pretty much matches your description. I'm going to call him up this afternoon, and see if he still has it. If so, I can always get the info from the book, and/or take and post a shot of it.
I'll get back to you.

HI cuz. Addall.com is a really good search engine for new or used books, might try there. I use(d) it extensively in the years I was building my collection. Good luck

Try Richard Simkin (no "s") on google images: Scottish Regiments simkin. I'm pretty sure that's your guy.
Also check out military-uniforms.com for other artist choices.

Figures that some one of our highly knowledgeable members would have the info, off the top of his head.... The info I got on the phone is as follows:
Richard Simkin's uniforms of the British Army : the cavalry regiments : from the collection of Captain K.J. Douglas-Morris, RN
by W Y Carman; Richard Simkin; K J Douglas-Morris
Publisher: Exeter, England : Webb & Bower, 1982.
ISBN: 0906671132
I think this might be the book!
