The abe price isn't too bad
I found the book on Amazon at $211.00
They had one copy available
We are talking two different books here. The “The Highlanders of Scotland: The complete watercolours commissioned by Queen Victoria from Kenneth MacLeay of her Scottish retainers and clansmen” (Hardcover) by Kenneth MacLeay is listed at Amazon for $211. The other, “The Clans and Tartans of Scotland” (Softcover) by R.R. McIan is listed on AbeBooks starting at $12.00. By the description both appear to be oversized books containing color plates. At only $12, the book at AbeBooks is a steal even if it is the wrong one. We’re not yet sure which book it is that Ron is looking for.

Ron, I think it is likely the McIan book you're looking for, because the plates in it are the same as on the STA site. It is an oversized book, and the plates are full page size. It has short clan histories as well. I think it wouldn't be too hard to get a hardcover copy if you prefer. If you want, I can take some pictures of my copy for you.
Also, Abebooks is a great place to search for old or out-of-print books. It basically links used book stores with buyers. I've used it several times, including once to buy "Tunes of Glory" by Kennaway.

Thanks guys,
Used Powell's in Portland before, the abebooks is new for me. Still holding out hope that my little brother will somehow locate the book...but that's very optimistic.
I do remember the art as much like the STA site. And I think I acquired the book in the very early '70s either at the Scottish shop in Alexandria, or Williamsburg, VA.

Wow! So my little brother emails me today he bought me the book with the MacLeay paintings for my birthday and its on its way!!
Don't know if that's the same book, but I'm a happy camper either way...and he probably is too to have me not asking after the lost book anymore.
No chump change either...over $100 easy in U.S. dollars.
Ron
Happy birthday to me....

Great birthday present, Ron! That's not the book I originally thought it was, but it looks great. I'm off to try and find a copy for myself!

Happy birthday there, Ron! I'd bake you a cake, but I'm sick. Wouldn't want to pass it on.
