Maybe it has been mentioned in another thread, but since I posted this this morning, I've been wondering how the length of the kilt got set at "Knee length. More than an inch either way and it isn't a kilt." Hopefully Matt Newsome, Todd, or someone who knows a lot more about the the history of the garment can shed some light on why there is such a tight constraint on the length of the garment. I mean, as McGurk mentioned, a belted plaid could have (whether it was done historically or not) been worn at almost any length. So why precisely knee length? Why not ankle length? Why not mid-calf? (I can answer why not mid-thigh myself!)
