The scene from the movie "Gotcha" is rolling through my mind where the kid is trying to oder a drink in a Paris restaurant and fails to pronounce it to the waiter's satisfaction. Anyhow...

Sounds interesting. I'm assuming by the alternative that they have listed, that French lemon aid is carbonated?

Yes, what the French call limonade is a soda pop similar to Sprite or 7UP.

In Britain, Lager and lemonade (7-up) is called Shandy.

There is also lager with lime juice, which is called:

    lager and lime

I think that's how the term "Limey" came about. My dad would always talk about how citrus would help fight a disease called ricketts, or some such (he grew up during the Second World War with the rationing). He would then go on to tell me that the British Navy would put lime juice in the drink to prevent such diseases as are caused by citrus deficiencies .

Hoping not to seem contrary, Duke of K, but a really compulsive/obsessive high school biology teacher banged this into my head: the citrus was to combat scurvy rather than pellegra. As in "ye scurvy knave!"...and if you look up the symptoms, it makes being a pirate somewhat less than an attractive career choice (even in spite of the fringe benefits like endless booty, buckling of one's swash and the ability to rise from the dead....oh...that was just in the movie?...never mind...).

But the reference to the lemon slice in weiss beer reminded me of being out doing photos of a local punk band back in the late seventies and, it being a ferociusly hot Chicago day (hot town, summer in the city, back a my neck...etc.), we decided to stop at a local joint for a brewski. It was an old German place on Southport Avenue and the bar was full of local old guys. We watched the bartender take a tall pilsner glass and fill it up off the tap, squirt a shot of raspberry syrup into it and toss a lemon slice in and let it sink to the bottom. Then the barkeep walks over and sez, "what'll ya have?" and eight voices in unison sez, "I'll have one of THOSE." Well, that was the end of the shoot....many beers were drunk and there was much rejoicing!

My dad would get into various dietary deficiency diseases when this rant would begin. Normally, I would stop paying attention when that began.

The only thing better was dealing with my grandfather who suffered from being in the 14-18 war. He was wonderfully quirky from the shell shock (now called PTSD). I remember him sitting in a three piece suit with the trouser legs hiked up so he could stick his feet in the fountain.
