    If your not familiar with tartan design it may be worth spending the cash to get an expert's help. It depends on how much resources you're willing to devote to the effort. In my case I didn't want to run the risk of having my design rejected by the STA as being too close to another existing tartan. So I used the services of Matt Newsome. It also depends on how creative you are. Good luck on your design.

    And it would be really useful for you to get some advice from a kiltmaker (I'd be happy to do it) on whether what you've designed will pleat well or not. Here are a couple of threads that illustrate that poorly designed tartans can be a real headache for a kiltmaker:
