    Early Christmas present

We had and early Christmas dinner at my son's house because he and his fianc'e will be spending Christmas at her family's house. Anyway, they gave me what appears to be an excellent book, "Scotland The Story of a Nation" by Magnus Magnusson. It looks like it has some excellent reviews. This should keep me busy for the winter; it's over 700 pages.

My roots on my mother's side go back to my GGGGG grandfather, John Kennedy Sr, Born in Scotland in 1731, and my mother gave me Kennedy as my middle name. I've got to make a trip to Scotland before my health prevents me from so doing.

The late Magnus Magnusson was from Iceland, actually. Scotland and the Scandinavian countries have a long-standing connection, from the Norsemen to the "Shetland Bus" of the Second World War.

Magnus was a very well known and liked tv personality here on Scottish tv, but is of Icelandic descent. He is survived by his daughter Sally who is a tv journalist.

Scotland The Story of a Nation by Magnus Magnusson is a most excellent book on the history of Scotland. If you love history that includes all the wars, heroes, scoundrals, etc., you'll love this book. It's not a dry read at all.

An excellent read, and has been pointed out, is not dry textbook reading. The story goes up to the point just after Culloden, then finishes with a chapter about the life of Sir Walter Scott. Scott contributed much to the re-generation of Scotland after Culloden.

Another excellent read, if you can find it is:
    "Before Scotland"

    By Alistair Moffat

It begins in pre-historic times and tells the tale of pre-Roman Britain, through that time period and ending with the story of Kenneth MacAlpin.

It is actually the book I would recommend reading before the other.

Another excellent read if you can find is:

    "The Steel Bonnets"

    by George MacDonald Fraser

It is the largely forgotten story of the Border Reivers. Most of the content centers around the 16th century when the Borders were at the worst.
Men who would steal the sky, if they could but grasp it.

Happy reading, and best regards for the holidays

    Fide et Fortitudine, aye!

    T.
