Early Christmas present
We had and early Christmas dinner at my son's house because he and his fianc'e will be spending Christmas at her family's house. Anyway, they gave me what appears to be an excellent book, "Scotland The Story of a Nation" by Magnus Magnusson. It looks like it has some excellent reviews. This should keep me busy for the winter; it's over 700 pages.
My roots on my mother's side go back to my GGGGG grandfather, John Kennedy Sr, Born in Scotland in 1731, and my mother gave me Kennedy as my middle name. I've got to make a trip to Scotland before my health prevents me from so doing.

The late Magnus Magnusson was from Iceland, actually. Scotland and the Scandinavian countries have a long-standing connection, from the Norsemen to the "Shetland Bus" of the Second World War.

Magnus was a very well known and liked tv personality here on Scottish tv, but is of Icelandic descent. He is survived by his daughter Sally who is a tv journalist.

Thanks, Mael. I've bookmarked that site. I'd love for my wife and I to go.

Scotland The Story of a Nation by Magnus Magnusson is a most excellent book on the history of Scotland. If you love history that includes all the wars, heroes, scoundrals, etc., you'll love this book. It's not a dry read at all.

I concur. Found it to be a great read.

I met Magnus Magnusson when he was in St Andrews for a recording of Mastermind and got his autograph which I have since unfortunately mislaid.
But the book is bound to be good - he enthralled the audience with stories and anecdotes in between the actual recordings and was always entertaining in his presentations.
