Scotland The Story of a Nation by Magnus Magnusson is a most excellent book on the history of Scotland. If you love history that includes all the wars, heroes, scoundrals, etc., you'll love this book. It's not a dry read at all.

I concur. Found it to be a great read.

I met Magnus Magnusson when he was in St Andrews for a recording of Mastermind and got his autograph which I have since unfortunately mislaid. 
But the book is bound to be good - he enthralled the audience with stories and anecdotes in between the actual recordings and was always entertaining in his presentations.
