While you can wear your kilt without a sporran, I never do it, and there are reasons why I don't, first, I need somewhere to put my keys, wallet etc. Second, when you sit a sporran will push down the aprons in the front, thus saving your modesty. Third, and again this is my thoughts on it, but without a sporran it looks too much like a skirt to me.

A sporran isn't totally necessary and there are people who don't or rarely wear one but I always do in public - it looks better and the reasons have already been covered by McMurdo. Round the house is a different matter though.
