I was going to say the tartan buttons too. I think buttons covered in the same tartan will cover you for all bases.
I guess "green pearl" would be what we call paua (If you were in NZ that might be considered a bit kitsch), but then, if they sort of toned in, but just gave a bit of sparkle, I think the effect could be rather cool.
