Button choice for bias cut waistcoat?
I am down to choosing between basic black or having some buttons cut from a piece of antler I own.
This is going to be made in a mostly green tartan, with a relatively high neckline and five or six buttons for wear with a four in hand type tie.
I am thinking most of the time it will be worn jacketless, that is just kilt, shirt, tie and waistcoat.
Second less frequent mode would be to add a tweed jacket.
I don't see gold colored buttons working for me. Silver colored buttons would be a possibility, but perhaps more blingy than my usual style.
So basic black buttons? My concern is that chopping up a bit of antler might be too rustic.
Thanks.

Covered with fabric to match the vest. Then it goes with whatever else you wear.

Maybe an 'antiqued' copper (not a bright, shiny finish, but the color of copper with a slight patina on it) or maybe pewter or nickel buttons?

Brushed Nickle plain color OR the same buttons that are on the coat (if you're wearing it with a coat).

I'll go along with Slacker Drummers suggestion of self-covered buttons. I'd also suggest green "pearl" buttons, or black leather knotted buttons as neutral, viable, options.

How about removable buttons, then you can have both, though you would have to add shanks to the antler for that.
But if you will only wear it alone or with a tweed jacket, then whatever buttons are on the tweed would be my suggestion.

I'm a fan of removable buttons. It shouldn't be too difficult to sew on a small ring to the back of the antler buttons in the same way as sewing them to the fabric. Though, a loop of fabric to go through the eyelet and a small safety pin to hold it might work just as well.

My instinct would be to go with black. I have a few waistcoats, and even though my favorite ones have horn and wood buttons (actually, my favorite one has leather buttons, but that's neither here nor there), they're mostly tweedy, themselves. A dressier one, a navy pinstripe, looks good with its black buttons; I associate the brighter (relatively) dyes of modern tartans and the navy with black, and the more neutral browns, &c., with antler. Along similar lines, antler buttons might not be contrastive enough, or, looking at it another way, might be too contrastive (depending on the color of the antler and the look you're going for).
Just my thoughts.

I'd go with staghorn buttons.

I was going to say the tartan buttons too. I think buttons covered in the same tartan will cover you for all bases.
I guess "green pearl" would be what we call paua (If you were in NZ that might be considered a bit kitsch), but then, if they sort of toned in, but just gave a bit of sparkle, I think the effect could be rather cool.
