From what we can see of the sett, it doesn't appear to actually be a tartan, so much as a fashion one. The fringe on that kilt also looks like it's either purled, or the fringe edge of a fleece blanket
The flashes on the right do appear very tiny, and the socks don't appear to be hose.
There's also a lot of horse hair going on in here. Some of it looks a little rough. (are the tassels stripped on that sporran second from the left?)
The fella in the blue kilt... Is his sporran being worn up at his natural waist?

The tiny flashes have already been mentioned, the gentleman with the red beard appears to be wearing a Day Plaid wrapped around his waist for a kilt and it's too long (past knees), he's also missing some of the black horse hair tassles on his sporran (4 out of 5), I do believe Great Beard is missing some on his to (I hape I'm nae tae nitpicky), I do like his beard. I don't know, some of it seems odd, some of it seems, although peculiar, alright. It does seem like it was the final dae of a weekend or week long drinking binge that included many a fight with them brave little elves that had tae give up their wee little flashes for trophies. Great Beard is also showing how hiking socks work for kilt hose. I can't stop laughing about them tiny flashes. I don't know why. It keeps crackin me up. Strange, yes, but todae I need a good laugh. I should stop.
I think they are all wearing kilts, not a day plaid as a kilt, I think it is a bit too dark to tell for sure. As for the Horsehair sporrans I think they all look grand, though I do not think I would wear one in such conditions I do not know the background of the photo, as was alluded to earlier they could have been piping. The wee flashes may seem strange at first however look at this photo of the Duke of Rothesay who definitely knows how to dress in Highland Attire.

Apropos of nothing in particular...look at the Duke's waistcoat--shawl collar and square bottom. Love it!! Very classy.

As for the original photo...could it have been shot in LA? Look at the house up over Red's shoulder...it's kind of West Coast Mediterranean. White "adobe" wall and red tile roof...

Aye, Glen! The Duke does know how to dress, doesn't he? He's even wearing a "Highland" tie, in this case the regimental tie of the Gordon Highlanders, "the finest regiment in the world", according to Sir Winston Churchill.

He certainly does favour that tie, but then again why shouldn't he?

As for the original photo, I like the horsehair, though some appear to have seen better days. I agree that the short flash guy appears to have on long socks and not hose, but I personally like a little brevity in the amount of flash showing. What strikes me is that the outfits seem more thrown together for a photo than normal wear. The polished shoes for all is too consistent compared with the other clothing items, so it seems odd. Maybe it's just a bunch of good friends that have had a good time. Shoot, I've looked much worse with very little excuse.

The Duke has frequently stated that the Gordons were a favourite of his. On one documentary, Instrument of War, the Duke mentions that the pipers at Balmoral when he was growing up were Gordons during an audience with Piper Harry Lunan:

Lunan was the last surviving piper of the First World War. He "went west" in 1994, may light perpetual shine upon him.

As to the original photo, all I notice is that the gentleman the is second from the right (brown jacket/green sweater) is very nice looking oh wait he's wearing a kilt..
There was a news story in the Telegraph not too long ago concerning the Duke of Rothesay and a regimental tie:

I also believe the Duke is also the Deputy Colonel-in-Chief of the Gordons.

I also believe the Duke is also the Deputy Colonel-in-Chief of the Gordons.
The Gordons were amalgamated with the Queen's Own Highlanders* in 1994 to form "The Highlanders"; in 2006, the Highlanders became the 4th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
HM The Queen is now the Colonel-in-Chief of the RRS, although I believe HRH the Duke of Edinburgh serves as Colonel-in-Chief of the 4 SCOTS.

Todd
*The Seaforth and Cameron Highlanders were amalgamated in 1961 to form the Queen's own Highlanders.
