Here is an idea on how the look. NOTE - the shirt is a "stand up collar",( it was chosen because of the vest collar & type of knot used.

I agree the cravat is a very good look... but also the jacket / waistcoat !! Would love to more about them, too.

Is the cravat only for evening wear?
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Ted, It depends on the style of the cravat. Some perhaps yes, but if you think ASCOT then NO. i have fpr years worn the "shorter" style cravats, ascots etc. for casual to "relaxed" dress wear.

Again see the site I posted & look around.

I can't look at the pictures, Puffer. Anyway, I've been wondering if there were something to take the place of a four-in-hand tie when wearing a daywear jacket and five button waistcoat. Perhaps an ASCOT would work?

Ted, an ASCOT is, IMHO, is BEST worn as follows:

    1. Casual = shirt ( short or long sleeve & either standard collar or button down) with an open collar ( NOTE _ The ASCOT is best worn under the shirt ) here is the idea http://www.elegantascot.com/silkpatterns.html
    2. "Relaxed Day wear" & eve out = Add a Day wear Jacket ( Tweed, Crail, etc.)
    3. A little more dressy look can be optained by adding a low cut casual vest

This is why it is called a "dress Argyll jacket", and why it is the best all round choice when starting out. With Jabot and cuff it looks very dressy; with a low cut waistcoat and black tie it is the equivalent of a tuxedo; with a five button waistcoat and four-in-hand tie it equal to the dark business suit.

Try that with a Prince Charlie coatee!

Agreed, I love how versatile a black Argyll jacket is. I don't think I'll ever buy a PC jacket because I can always dress up the Argyll with a jabot or down with a tie!

Same here; throw in removable buttons, though.
