I must tread careful here as everyone knows I am hardly the traditionalist. Couple of observations though, based purely on preference and my personal experience.
I have tried wearing a Jacket and Kilt without a tie. I was going for a smart but casual look (and it must be the way I was dragged up) but I really don't like it, doesn't ride well with me at all. If I wear a jacket now, I always wear a tie. To my eye, the waistcoat you're wearing has a jacket equivalence about it because it looks quite formal and appears that you've left your jacket over the back of a chair somewhere. Consequently, to me at least it is shouting "TIE!" Were it a different kind of waistcoat (plain black, less formal looking mibbies).
eg:
(You'll have to imagine the kilt... best picture I can find to illustrate the point.)
maybe it would work better. I appreciate it's NOT traditional either but in my humble opinion a tie IS required with the waistcoat you have on.
If you are going to drop the tie, you might want to try a collarless shirt. I have no idea how that would fare in the traditional sense but in my humble, combined with the turned down waistcoat would look nice and rustic. (Ooooh arrrr!)
Onother observation, again purely personal. Charcoal socks. Nothing wrong with them at all... Some people hate Black socks, fine... some people hate white socks, fine... My personal bug is charcoal socks and for the life of me I couldn't work out why till it dawned on me I used to wear them in school... with shorts. They will always look like schoolboy socks to me. Sozz!
Other than those points... Excellent turnout, well done! (Oh yeah. Long sleeves with a waistcoat, always for me. But you mentioned that already.)
I now return you to your regular broadcast. Thanks for listening.

Just a suggestion... if one were to desire to wear a waistcoat with a short sleeved shirt such as that, try a waistcoat without the Argyle pocket flaps, and leave the waistcoat open. It will have more of a casual look that I think would "jive" better with the short sleeved shirt.

Exactly! I fall into both categories, without a doubt.
And I DO have a subscription to G & G...one of my favourite magazines!

just the gardens and the guns, not the scrip...
So far, I borrow other people's copies of the excellent magazine. The editor, Rebecca Wesson Darwin grew up in my town- but on the Right Side of the Tracks...
By the way, my garden is about to bake to a crisp here. Please send rain.
Some take the high road and some take the low road. Who's in the gutter? MacLowlife

I thought you looked fine. Perhaps if you post a picture of the pair of us you'll look even better in comparison.

I like plain 'army style' sporrans like yours when a man is dressed more casually.
Some people go over the top, and I have seen someone dressed casually with a full dress military sporran. It looked bizarre, as if a badger had crashed into his kilt at speed.

Well CMcG,
I always appreciate your style, but this one misses on a few notes for me.
Now remember this is only my opinion, which you paid big bucks for
The short sleeve white shirt. I agree going with long sleeve rolled up if you want too, and in a different color. The short sleeve white is just screaming for a plastic pocket protector
Too my eye, the emerald green of the waistcoat neither matches, compliments nor contrasts, it seems to actually clash with the green in the kilt.
The argyll pocket flaps just don't fit the rest of the set up.
Not a fan of flashes, especially in bright green.
So, if you change the shirt, the waistcoat, and the flashes I think you'd look great!
Again, only my silly opinion...but you did ask
Good on ya for the courage seek input.
Best regards,
Brooke

I recon you look just fine mate, maybe unbutton the waistcoat to go that step further toward relaxed-cool. nowt wrong with the short sleeve shirt look not in my book any who, being a kiltie ain't no fashion parade it's about being comfy in your own skin/kilt
Well that's my 2p worth
I'll get me coat!
