I wear mine int the shirt pocket with the chain running to a button hole that is slightly above the top of the pocket. This works well for me. I'd like to hear from you guys on how you wear without the waistcoat.
My chains are all plain and vary in length some being about half the length of standard.

I've seen the shirt pocket done, it seems like it works well. I always keep mine in the sporran when kilted with the chain clipped to the front where it's covered by the flap. I'm not sure if I'd do that with a mechanical watch, though, I'd be afraid all the banging about would break the balance.
Also, the jacket breast pocket as I mentioned before, if you're wearing a jacket with a lapel buttonhole. This is the strap I have which is made for that, but I've seen it done with chains as well.
