this is an easy one guys. as the case may be ask the woman in your lives or your significant other as the case may be. they will probably be happy to tell you exactly how you should wear it.

I voted to the top of the belt. This is also how I wear my ties when working.

A long, long time ago I read an article in GQ about this -- their opinion was that anything longer than the top of the lower garment is too long and looks sloppy, and anything shorter than a couple fingers above this point is too short and looks nerdy. I agree thoroughly (will all due respect to McMurdo -- sorry mate, too long for me)...
Furthermore, the narrow end of the tie should be shorter than, or equal length to the wider end, but under no circumstances should it ever exceed it. Sometimes I see a few shorter men (common when you live in Japan) wearing the wide end down to their crotches (no, I'm serious) because the tie itself is too long for them... If this is the case, you can usually "cheat" by tucking the narrow end into your dress shirt between buttons, and covering it with the wider end, pinning it down with a tie clip.
I wear ties every day and if it's not quite right I take the time to re-tie it. I think it's important to take pride in one's appearance, especially if you're going to go to the trouble to wear a shirt and tie in the first place.
As for knots, I always tie a double Windsor (something I was taught waaaay back in Air Cadets as a teen), although I will modify when necessary. For example I have a French designer tie of woven silk, that if tied double, the knot would be massive! I have to tie only a half...
And finally, on a divergent (but interesting) note, I've been meaning to try out the "Merovingian" knot one of these days when I go to work, but alas, I wake up too late in the a.m. and am in too much of a hurry to do it.

I think I have some ties in the back of the closet somewhere, but ever since I got out of corporate America the turtle neck has been my standard.

I too believe that one's tie should reach the top of one's belt

I would say McMurdo has it about right. Ties that are too short or too long just look a bit sloppy whether worn with a kilt, p@nts or whatever. I even saw one protruding from the neck of a turtle-neck sweater which really did look ridiculous!

To my eye it looks far better than a tie that is entirely too short.
I did not intend to mean that I thought you looked sloppy. I really only meant that about ties and low riding pants.

My father taught me the way to tie a tie was the full Windsor. It wasn't until much later that learned of the other methods. At the time I thought the other guys were just being lazy. I still wear the Full Windsor almost every time.

Yeah, that's a good idea. That way, you'll always have a fan. Happy girlfriends make happy wives.
