How long should your tie be worn with a kilt?

I have noticed a great variety of tie lengths among our good membership when they are worn with their kilts.

What is your preferred length?

Jamie, good question. As for me I prefer the length to come down to the top of the kilt or the belt, but no lower. I also prefer a solid colour wool tie with the kilt. Something like this:

Sorry, I couldn't resist using that one.

But, no, I voted that I don't wear ties. I'm either in T-shirts or a variation on clerical shirts (actually a solid black kosovorotka - it looks like a clerical shirt without the white notch, and buttons to the side rather than the front).

But, I agree with McMurdo. Aim for between the top of the kilt and middle of the buckle. I've found that ties come to different points every day - something to do with the natural variations in the tying process. So, there should, IMO, be a bit of a "fudge factor" involved.

I habitually wear a bow tie, which effectively keeps it out of my soup.

I was taught that a properly worn neck tie should just touch the top of a man’s p@nts, covering the top p@nts buttons at the longest. I carry this etiquette over to kilt wearing as well, with the tie just grazing the top of the kilt or buckle. Because on average kilts are worn higher than pants, this scheme can be a little hard sometimes with standard neckties, they can be way too long sometimes and I'll end up tucking a bit of the narrow end into my shirt. I've aquired a few of the shorter wool ties sold through various kilt vendors, and these are better for me.

This having been said, I find I rarely wear a tie without a waistcoat, so that covers any miscalculations in length I may commit.

I voted top of the kilt, but in truth I seldom wear a tie unless I'm also wearing a waistcoat. So my real answer is "short enough not to show below the waistcoat".

With my kilt I have it to the edge of the top of the kilt. If I'm wearing a belt I'll tie it a little lower

Even this would be too long for me. I don't like it when ties look too long. You see it all the time when guy wear pants hanging off the hips, and it looks sloppy. The kilt is worn higher, so it makes me want to wear ties shorter. The problem is my new university tie is really long. I guess for the change in the fashion of pants.
