I am one of the two solids. I like the tartans, they look swell on all you fella's. Just not on me.(or i haven't found the one I like yet) I'm also not into all the jewelry you guys wear with your kilts, see and dos, sporrans ,et all. just give me my solid color kilts, my tools, and my freedom. then I am happy. I don't even care if you call it a skirt, your perceptions are your limitations. My boys don't care what you think either (as long as they are free). see ya

I chose tartans because "both" would indicate a rule rather than an exception (I have a leather kilt and an indie blue kilt and a camo kilt but they are the exception)!

    Tartan

I own three kilts: One modern and two historical. The modern one is an ancient muted Campbell. The two historical are a 77th Highlander great kilt, and a 42nd wee kilt.

Just my prference. Tartan or solid - it is up to the individual.

I chose tartan as I consider myself a traditionalist. The closest I have to a solid is the SWK shadow. Maybe it's my own prejudiced mind set that can't quite get past seeing plain kilts as a skirt. I would'nt dream of critisizing anyone for wearing one though. It's just not for me. One thing that wearing a kilt has done for me is made me more tolerant of others. Seeing a kid with twenty facial piercings with red, green and purple hair doesn't even get a second glance from me these days.

This past year, I had a brown kilt suit (jacket, waist coat, kilt) made from Harris Tweed. I also have a Dark Isle kilt which looks black but on closer inspection reveals a damask tartan check. Both of these box pleated kilts were made by Matt Newsome. I have not noticed any change in the response of people to me in a kilt when wearing these garments vs. traditional tartan kilts. I also own several Utilikilts in solid colours. As for the people who want to call it a skirt in a pejorative sense, they are most likely not bright enough to consider whether it has a check or not.
