Welsh Tartan material
Greetings all!!! I hope this is the right place for this question, if not then i am very sorry. I have had a question posed to me by two of my closest friends that I couldn't answer well. They are getting married in a few months and are looking for some Welsh tartan material to have my wife make into a Welsh Cilt for him and a dress that is accented in the same tartan for her. the question asked was were to get the material. They found a place to get wool but their budget is somewhat tight and $1,000.00 is a little steep for them. any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Where else to look but our own kiltstore.net variation of welshkiltstore.com, which is another of the Scotweb network. probably best to access it via the advert for kiltstore in the upper right of the forum as I believe they probably have pretty much the same stuff, or can get it.

It might be worth trying the Welsh Tartan Centre, I don't have the address to hand , but Mr Google will help.
There are several "welsh" tartans available, I recently made a kilt out of the St David's Tartan, modelled here by the happy ( but very cold ) new owner....

"Welsh tartan" isn't very easy to come by. It's exclusively produced by the Welsh Tartan Centre. The only other thought I have is possibly contacting Marton Mills. They have a line of polyviscose material, which is considerably less costly than worsted wool. However, they only offer one Welsh tartan: St. David's National (as seen in the above photo.) If you're ok with that tartan, then MM may be worth looking into.

All the Welsh tartans used by the Wales Tartan Centre are woven at the Cambrian Woollen Mill in Llanwrtyd Wells. Their site is http://www.cambrian-mill.co.uk/ and there is a contact button you could try to see if they could quote you and supply you direct.

It occurred to me that you're seeing prices per yard/meter for double width fabric. That is, 4 yards will make an 8-yard kilt.
You may want to consult the Scottish Tartans Museum shop, USA Kilts, Celtic Croft (all Xmarks sponsors). Their customer service is tremendous in all ways. [Edit: using a stateside retailer will avoid your having to deal directly with import/customs issues.]
I know that the Crofts retail both the wool and polyviscose fabric. They list some tartan and tartan-trimmed gowns, too, but those are pretty high-dollar if I recall correctly.
Rocky of USA Kilts is known for making nice kilts of the St. David's National in PV, and may be able to supply some trim fabric along with it. If a PV kilt is in the plans, I'd try to get it made by Rocky and save your seamstress the learning process (assuming she has not yet made kilts).
Matt of the STM is, of course, a hero of tartan knowledge and kilt-making.

Ah, thanks for the clarification!
