Time for the second kilt....recomendations..
So I's got me this here Stillwater Thrifty Kilt 'norder to see if the kilt thingee would take. Well I like the thing, but I recognize that it is lacking. I want to get a more traditional sort of kilt...but really don't want to go the money for a full out woolen ensemble. I was thinking that I want something around $50 or so, with straps...keep in mind that I live in Heat and Humidityville, Texas. Also got a wedding coming up in April that I will most likely wear it to...

I'd say you're going to have to go a bit more than $50.00 but perhaps you should look into another Stillwater this time a Standard

I second McMurdo. If you have to spend less than $100, you can't do much better than a Stillwater Standard. It's that, or make it yourself.
The difference in quality between the thrifty and the standard is immense, you will be impressed. Once you pull the Standard out of the box, I doubt you'll wear the thrifty kilt for much but yardwork and lounging around. In fact, I bet you'll consider disassembling it and using the material for a fly plaid if you get the same tartan in the Standard as your daughter got you in the "thrifty"..
Also, you'll know after owning a Standard for a few months, if kilt-wearing is really "for you", and if it is, then brace your checkbook for impending damage! I can't remember if you have an appropriate kilt belt and sporran, but if you don't, GET THEM. Stillwaters prices are extremely reasonable for reasonable quality stuff. I recommend their "upgraded" braided leather day sporran at, if I remember correctly...$35..

You will not be disappointed with a Stillwater Standard. I already have two, and looking to add a couple more tartans to my closet from him.

I second, third, fourth (?) that motion. Get another Stillwater. Jamie has several, and no one who is not "in the know" can tell they're not expensive. A standard is fine, if you can swing (no pun intended) a heavyweight, go for it!
Be well,

Think of it more as an investment than a garment. It'll outlast your jeans if taken care of properly. If you spend a the extra and get a standard (or heavyweight), you'll feel that much better wearing it around.

Go for whatever you can afford as your second. It's the third and the fourth and thereafter that really count. It's far more important that you are so comfortable in a kilt than it is the quality. Cost is hugely important at first, but as GB has said, you soon discover that longevity is far more imortant. I can't wear my father's kilts (entirely different shapes), but my brother does. I do, however, wear two of my grandfather's. Amortise that over the years, if you will!

Heat and humidity for me equals SK Hiking or poly-cotton, or an AmeriKilt.

While Alan has a good idea,..I would suggest getting a different tartan. You already know how you look in the tartan/color you have, try another and see how you look in it.
