Health Problem
A few weeks ago I decided that it was finaly time to at least attempt to get rid of my gut. At least while I was in my twenties and it was somewhat possible to even do so.
I have come to a problem though…
in my quest to get the perfect set of kilt-pack abs… I seem to be rendering my current four kilts..unusable! I used to be a size 37-38 waist.. But I have slipped down to a solid 36. If I keep this up Ill be solid 32 and be unable to wear even my smallest kilt.
Oh the choice... slim down and slip out... or not

Kilts hold their value well. Sell what's too large and use the proceeds to buy kilt that fit.
It worked for me going the other way UP the waistline...should work down sizing too.
Very short jones waiting for a previously loved kilt to be delivered.
Its a near crime to leave kilts hanging in the closet because they're too large or too small now. Do some fellow kiltie a favor and sell them and buy new ones.

Why on earth do you need to slim down? A waist line of 37-38 is nothing unless you are a very short guy. I'm a 42" and proud of it.

When faced with a similar problem I began to make my own kilts, and when I shrank out of them I simply remade them smaller.
If that is not an option for you then the selling and buying smaller is probably going to be the best way to go, or a swap with someone who is going in the opposite direction.
A smaller waist will enable you to find military kilts in your size, and also numerous outgrown ones. Be sure to check the length, though, as at 32 inches you could find they are shorter lengths for the not yet fully grown.

If you can take sizes off your waist safely by all means DO IT. Don't keep the FAT there just to keep the kilts. The health benifits out weigh the kilt benifits.
I have sold one of mine already for the same reason and am about to sell another to a kilt friend. So I say GO FOR IT!

Cripes! Go for the health factor and loose the weight and inches while you are still young. The older you get the "Law of diminishing returns" kicks in and you struggle to loose the weight/inches. Get rid of them now and the struggle will be lessened later. The kilts can wait, be altered, sold for newer ones. Every time I think I'm ahead in loosing weight, the behinder I get and am back up to my portly 46".

Yep, do it while you still can. I'm a Type 2 diabetic and my doctor has been trying to get me to loose weight for the past 13 years. I'm down to 240 from my original 260. In trying to do what the doc wanted me to do, I've managed to lower my A1C number from 12.9 to 5.7, so she is happy with that.

Drop the weight now and do your best over the next 30 years to keep as much of it from coming back as you can, becasue when you get older and heavier your metabolism and physical ability to exercise may limit your ability to try to lose it later.
Regarding your kilts, you have several options:
1. Have the buckles moved in so that the same kilt fits a smaller waistline---only works for some kilts and for a limited amount but you should be able to get an inch or two out of them that way for now.
2. Find a good kiltmaker and have the kilts altered down to a smaller size---easier to go from too big to smaller than the other way around.
3. Put your too big kilts in longterm cold storage until the day comes that your waistline reaccumulates back to where it is now, then they will fit again. Buy a couple new kilts to use in the mean time.
4. Sell your kilts to finance buying one or two new kilts made to fit you when you reach your final size.
5. Donate your kilts to others who are in need of them, and feel a heck of a whole lot better about yourself, probably helping you achieve an even greater weight loss than you expected, while simultaneously getting closer to that oft sought after state of nirvana. Now that you are feeling really good about yourself treat yourself to a great new well fitting kilt and wear it proudly knowing all the good things you have accomplished.
6. Keep them and display them on your family room wall as reminders of just exactly how large you used to be so that you will never be tempted to allow yourself to let that happen to your body again.
7. Trade your too small kilts with someone near your size who is having the same problem but going the other way in waist size (them going up while you are going down).
8. Wear your too big kilts kind of like the young kids do with their sag and bag jeans, with at least 6 inches of your boxer shorts showing above your kilt waistline and with the lower edge of your aprons about 6 inches off the floor (realizing that the trads among the crowd will be looking down upon this option)
But whatever you do with them DON'T EVER EVER wear them with a flat cap. ;)
Good luck with your weight loss program---keep us informed of your progress and we will cheer you on.

Save them in the back of the closet for when you put the weight back on?
Sorry, couldn't resist. I'm a heavy too.
