Black leather sporran with black tie?

There are no kilt police.

I am looking at dumping $150 in round trip airfare to rent a white fur sporran as the groom at my own wedding. For that same amount I can pick from several very nice black leather sporrans that I could wear for many years.

Green kilt, white pleated front tuxedo shirt, self tie bow tie, black kilt length jacket with satin lapels, 3 button waistcoat with satin lapels, claret hose, blue flashes, black shoes, likely a plaid.

Thanks. If I could afford it I would buy a white fur one to pass around the family to future grooms.

Forget the white fur sporran if the money can be spent on something you really want. I don't know what black leather sporran you are lookihg at but there are plenty that would be more than acceptable for formal wear. Have a look on some of the merchants sites thru google. I am sure that I have seen pics of grooms wearing PC's with black leather sporrans(sorry can'rt remeber which sites)

I know you want everything perfect for the big day, and so it should be, but be aware, the lovely bride will get most of the attention and what you are wearing will never get as many comments as the bridal gown.

You will be fine with a black leather sporran.Wear the kilt and assorted attire just as the "instruction manual" says(without the plaid I would suggest) and with head held high, you will "knock 'em dead"!

Thinking about my reply above. Yes folks, I do think about my replies on occasion!!! Why do I suggest no plaid? Now it is true I am not a fan of plaids, but in this case that is not the reason I suggest that it is not worn. My reasoning is this; by wearing the plaid you are in many peoples eyes "upping" the level of formality whilst the black leather sporran is, as we know, lowering the formality stakes a wee tad. So by steering the slightly less high profile route by not wearing the plaid, the differences will not shout out as much as they might.

Well said Jock. I'd add that the groom should invest in a nice sporran that would actually get used again. For the 150 and a few dollars more get a nice K & L that will last a lifetime. Several of our people here including Steve and Rocky sell them. Congratulations on the big day!

There are many different types of leather sporran and some are more versatile than others. I've pulled a few images from the L&M website to help make a suggestion, but these types of sporran are definitely available from various manufacturers and in differing price ranges. Would others agree with my thinking in terms of which black leather sporran?

A hunting sporran would be your best bet. Leather (not fur) and fairly versatile in terms of formality. The one with the metal cantle would be more formal than the one without.




I wouldn't opt for a very plain leather sporran in any of the following styles. While they are lovely, I just don't think they are dressy enough for the outfit you describe....

I got away for years wearing a rather cheap all leather 'hunting' style sporran I got off ebay with my formal wear, no one seemed to notice. There is not really a rule that one has to have a fuzzy sporran for dress.

And a couple years ago I traded up to this nice inexpensive fur number from Jerry at Stillwater; http://stores.channeladvisor.com/Sti...ress%20Sporran for much less than the 150 bucks you mention. I think they have white and black too.

I have that very one, and got it with versatility in mind -- in other words, either day or formal wear, as I have some friends who would take serious umbrage at my wearing my fur sporran (also a Ferguson Britt).
