Unravelling Belt Loop

Hello,

One of the beltloops on my tank is beginning to unravel on the inside of the loop. Nothing major yet, but something I would like to stop now before if becomes major!

Short of taking the loop off and rebuilding it, is there anything I can do to stop it?

What about using something like fray stop, or some other fabric glue? I don't have any real experience sewing and I have not been able to find any kilt repairers local to me.

Few minutes with needle and thread should be all that's needed. Will you be at the Costa Mesa Games this month, or Vista Games in June? I reckon you could find somebody at CM to do the repair, or if it can wait 'til Vista I will gladly stitch it up for you. We'll be at the Clan Donnachaidh Saturday for sure!

If you don't want to wait, any cleaners that advertises tailoring/alterations should also be able to handle it. I don't think it is a good place to try to use fray check.

Thanks for the quick response! My mother in law is going to be in town this weekend and she is a very accomplished seamstress, so I am thinking she should be able to help out if it isn't a specialized repair.

Is there any trick or specific stitch I should ask for?

Hard to say how the original maker constructed the loop. If she's handy with a needle, she should be able to look at it and figure out the best way to catch up the loose edge/end, stabilize it, and prevent further undoing. That's the best I can offer without seeing it myself.

Is the fabric that the loop is made from coming unwoven, or is the belt loop coming unattached from the kilt?

The fabric is just beginning to become unwoven.

Two words...."Duct tape"

They now make it in colors to match most tartans

There's nothing specialized about a belt loop, be it on a kilt or a pair of trousers. If your MIL is as handy as you say, she'll be right on it.

Don't use the Fray Check on your kilt. It won't ruin the fabric, but it will age and flake off in an unsightly way.
