I was using "readable" in quotes to mean "Someone familiar with the image will understand what it is." Knowing the general convention of clan badges, for instance, one will "read" a brooch or pin as a clan badge by the shape, if it is rendered very small.

We're on the same page, just speikin' twa leids.

I have to admit my argument against stripes is personal -- I find it hard to memorize tartans or regimental/school tie patterns. A tie striped in XMTS colours would be acceptable to me -- but a piece of me wants it to be something that more than "just us" will recognize.
