I work at Disneyland (the original one in California) and I see kilts all the time. Just day before yesterday in fact, a guy with a shiny black Utilikilt. We see them so often that they don't engender much reaction from anybody.
From what I see (tens of thousands of the "general public" every day) Utilikilts are very popular here on the Left Coast. I see dozens of Utilikilts for every traditional kilt. Usually the Utilikilt wearers are young men from the Pacific Northwest.
About Disneyland being expensive, yes it's amazing how much ticket prices have gone up from when I started there ($15). Any Xmarkers visiting Anaheim contact me and I'll probably be able to hook you up.
Last time I was in Anaheim was World's Strongest Man 2007 - initially it was going to be held at Universal Studios (like the original 1977-1979 World's Strongest Man) but Disney cancelled at the last minute and we held the entire televised competition in the parking lot of the Anaheim Hilton, Venice Beach (for the car walk and stones), and some really ritzy golf course on the PCH (for the carry medley and safe lift).
I envy your weather...
