Latest Scottish Adventure #3
Heading from the borders to Dundee (calling in briefly at Edinburgh to pick up a plaid for a friend) we travelled via Falkirk, Stirling and Perth. I had seen the Falkirk Wheel from the train on my February trip and Mum wanted to see it anyway, so here are some pics.
The Falkirk Wheel as we approached from the car park.

A closer view.

Boats on the Forth and Clyde Canal by the Falkirk Wheel.

Looking up at the Wheel from the cafe.

A boat enters the wheel which is then sealed off from the canal.

The Wheel rotates and starts to lift the boat upwards.

Me in front of the wheel. Mum can take good photos when she wants!

End on view of the Wheel in operation. As it lifts one boat it is bringing another down from the higher Union Canal.

The Falkirk Wheel is unique and replaces a series of 11 locks which meant several hours of intense labour and does it in minutes.

More to come!

That's absolutely fascinating! I'd never heard of this before. What an ingenious approach. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Oh, and might I say you're looking looking dapper as ever.

As such the masterpiece hat the Falkirk wheel is, I'm sure that Wales has her share of canal engineering masterpieces also.

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Llangollen canal northern Wales.
Opened in 1805 this 1007 foot aqueduct rises 121 feet above the river Dee.

But I am sure that Thomas Telford would have approved ccga!
He could build an aqueduct to link canals at equal height but there was only the lock to raise boats between different heights.

There was also the inclined plane and boat lift (Anderton), there is also the submarine lock that they're trying to find and excavate.

Thanks for the pictures of the Wheel. I've caught glimpses of it from the M80 and also from the train, but never had the opportunity to visit.
