That would be trousers Something that most of us here wear only when we have to

When used in the same context as kilts, it usually denotes trousers in a tartan.

True "trews" were actually more like tartan tights, than anything else. Historically, they were generally made on the bias, I believe, and sometimes included an integral sock portion, like the "sleepers" that kids wear for bed.
Today, the lable "trews" usually just means "tartan pants". Not my favorite thing in the world, I have to say.

Here's wikipedia's entry for them:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trews
In my mind, the main difference between modern/military trews and tartan pants is that the waist on trews is higher, at the navel like the top of a kilt. This allows them to be worn with a kilt belt or Prince Charlie. I believe Archie and Hector on Monarch of the Glen would wear them instead of kilts at times for formal occassions.

Panache is spot on. Though I think what many merchants sell as "trews" these days are just tartan trousers, without the high waist.

As for wearing trews any formal occassion would be fine and I would imagine that they would work very well with a tweed jacket and turtleneck.
I have to get off this thread as the F-H.C.A.G. is fast approaching and trews are verboten in this household by order of a higher power*.

I've been contemplating getting some trews to wear with my Argyll jacket for those days when we have 50-60 mph gusts... Man I love living in the high desert.

...my best friend has a pair of trews, but he doesn't seem to wear them often. I think it takes a certain type of individual to really pull that look off.
