The earlier thread that was mentioned contained two designs by McMurdo which were much more traditional, INMHO. Why couldn't those be "resurrected" for this discussion?
Some organizations do have a "crested tie"; i.e. the Anglican Society of King Charles the Martyr has a Jacobite White Rose on a Red tie as their official neckware.

Such a tie would really only be "matchy" if worn with an XMarks tartan kilt, and if you're wearing that kilt, the tie would of course be a little redundant.
I feel like this "non-matchy" thing is getting a bit strained lately, to the point where sometimes I'm not sure whether or not it is being overemphasized just for humor.
My personal feeling is that a tie that contains all of the colours of one's kilt is only a small step above wearing a tie in the tartan of one's kilt with said kilt.
That said, I know some folks prefer both of those looks; they're just not for me.
I think an X-Marks tie, even in the colours of the tartan, would be great for those who don't, for whatever reason, own a kilt in X-Marks tartan and want to show their affiliation in a different way.
So full speed ahead with the blue, grey, and gold ties!
I do think it would be wise to have those who are familiar with many institutions that use such ties look over the final designs to ensure we haven't inadvertently come up with a design that is already in use by a well-known organization.

Has this site been mentioned? (I apologize in advance as I have not scoured the entire thread to see if it has been mentioned)
http://www.uniform-ties.com/regiment...d-neckties.php
They have seven variant patterns of the regimental ties. If you click on each, they provide color options that would suit our needs as is but would only require minor tweaking to make the tie unique.
They do offer custom design assistance (for a fee) and the price point seems reasonable.

I was using "readable" in quotes to mean "Someone familiar with the image will understand what it is." Knowing the general convention of clan badges, for instance, one will "read" a brooch or pin as a clan badge by the shape, if it is rendered very small.
We're on the same page, just speikin' twa leids.
I have to admit my argument against stripes is personal -- I find it hard to memorize tartans or regimental/school tie patterns. A tie striped in XMTS colours would be acceptable to me -- but a piece of me wants it to be something that more than "just us" will recognize.

I am glad you clarified that, I was sure if you were referring to Calvin Coolidge or John Calvin but I suspect neither of them ever wore "rocketship underpants".
Then again - one would never know...

Excellent thought, Todd.

no worries about hurt feelings here. It ends up being less work for me
I guess I assumed that if none of the previous designs could result in a forum consensus, we might wish to start afresh.

I am not at all sure what the history of "club", regimental, old School ties are, but let us say that in, roughly,a period from 1900 to 1930 were when a lot(most?) of that sort of tie was" invented" and I know not who and how the colours were put together. Often regimental colours were combined, heraldic colours, or the colour scheme of some chancellor of a university's wife's curtains. The end result is that we have the colours that we have, which may not be the colours that we may have chosen some 80 years down the line. Much like most Clan tartans in fact.
So whatever tie colour scheme we eventually have for our Xmarks tie, it will inevitably not please every one. So the danger is that we could easily be still discussing the colour scheme of "our" tie in 5 years time(about a year so far), by trying to please every body. WE WON'T! This is maybe a time for a committee of one to take on the design job.
Remember, just like Clan tartans we have to accept them for what they are and just enjoy the "belonging" and get on with life.
I have been watching this thread and have seen other threads regarding consensus designing and they all end up the same ie I like that, well I don't, perhap if we just tweak that, no the other way.
Jock your suggestion is the only way we will ever get a Xmarks tie

I have to agree with Jock. Whatever the design is, I'm sure we'll get to love it.
